Easy day for the first 98 miles. Gorgeous ride thru the Somerset
country lanes. A few "hills" but compared to day #1 and #2 - barely
registered. Only incident of note being Woody knocking 3 of us over in
one go, just because a combined harvester (1.5x width of road) came
trundling round the corner and he panicked. Obvious thing to do really
when a 10 tonne bit of farming equipment is heading toward you -
spread yourselves and your bikes on the road immediately in front if
it.
Someone's gears broke and someone had a puncture. Involved 2 trips to
2 different bike shops to repair the gears and buy a new tyre. So
today's competition is - who was this person (s)
Despite these incidents we managed to do 98 miles in relative style
and ease. Mike (Coco) was on fire - shouting encouragement from the
rear (note the position - he hangs back and drafts anyone stupid
enough to sit in front - though oddly he never goes anywhere near
Martin).
When we got to Monmouth Dean was getting the coffees in (having taken
a brake from peddling due to achilles problem). Quick coffee, then
quickly on to polish off the last 12 miles.
The last 11th was challenging, enjoyable in it's own "special" way.
Long, steep hills which just appeared from nowhere around the corner.
Got to the b&b very late, wet, cold, tiered, hungry.
Regards
Simon
